CEE 421: Concrete Structures

This course covers the design of reinforced concrete structural elements such as beams, slabs, and columns to meet ACI 318 code requirements. Analysis of reinforced concrete structural elements and their design is covered. The course objectives are: (i) To make students aware of the principles in structural concrete design methods, (ii) To enable students use fundamental principles of engineering mechanics to reinforced concrete design, (iii) To enable the application of principles learned to real engineering design.

Tentative schedule of topics

Week 1: Introduction, Materials and Design process, Introduction to the Flexure theory
Week 2-3: Flexure theory, Flexural analysis and design of beam sections with tension steel
Week 4-5: Flexural analysis and design of beam sections with tension and compression steel
Week 6-7: Analysis and design of flanged sections
Week 7-8: One way slabs
Week 9-10: Shear in beams
Week 11: Serviceability and elastic analysis, development length
Week 12-15: Columns – combined axial load and bending

The students are expected to develop a comprehensive computing project that involves reinforced concrete structural design, the terms of which will be provided in the class.
